This book follows the first book in the series "The Cruel Prince"。 In terms of character development, plot, writing style, and relationships, this book is so much better than the first book。 While I enjoyed the first book, this book was amazing and had me freaking out in every chapter。 Mostly, I loved the characterization of Jude who is both a strong character (and an anti-hero) but still very realistic and true to herself。 A lot of female main characters who are written to be "badass" in YA nov This book follows the first book in the series "The Cruel Prince"。 In terms of character development, plot, writing style, and relationships, this book is so much better than the first book。 While I enjoyed the first book, this book was amazing and had me freaking out in every chapter。 Mostly, I loved the characterization of Jude who is both a strong character (and an anti-hero) but still very realistic and true to herself。 A lot of female main characters who are written to be "badass" in YA novels tend to be overdone and poorly written, with the author trying too hard to emphasize how cool and badass their character is to the point where it's basically just a self-insert。 Jude's characer was flawlessly done and her progression and development from a mortal girl finding her way in a terrifying land to a powerful player in the political game makes the book owrht reading。 Moreover, the plot itslef is fast-paced and entertaining。 The relationship betwee Cardan and Jude is my all-time favourite romance。 It's everything I can't stop thinking about it。 LOVE THIS BOOK。 Read it read it read it。 。。。more

**SPOILER ALERT**OH MY FUCKING GOD。 I AM STILL SCREAMING。 I AM SO MAD, SO SO MAD AT CARDAN。 Oh my god, that’s all I can say。 That was CRAZY。 There were so many plot twists, that I had not expected AT ALL。 Well, actually I already knew beforehand that The Ghost would betray Jude along with Taryn。 And, yet, it STILL surprised me。 That’s how you know a book is good。 Wow, just WOW。 Cardan exiled her? This book was a quick and good read。 I liked the plot twist and some scenes came literally out of the blur and left my jaw open。 However, there’s still much of the romance missing that resist me from giving it 5 stars。

I haven’t read the third one yet but it’s gonna be hard to beat this gem。 Jude and Cardan still love them

It finally picked up near the end。 It wasn't dragging at the start and the middle, the plot and writing was just kinda off。 The whole story revolved around Jude。 It felt like the whole plot was completely dependent on the protagonist's actions。 Not like there was a world and she was in it。 It was more like the world existed just so it can move for Jude。 It finally picked up near the end。 It wasn't dragging at the start and the middle, the plot and writing was just kinda off。 The whole story revolved around Jude。 It felt like the whole plot was completely dependent on the protagonist's actions。 Not like there was a world and she was in it。 It was more like the world existed just so it can move for Jude。 。。。more

I was in the biggest reading slump of my life — stressed out because of school, struggling mentally because of COVID, finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning — when suddenly I started reading this book and got to escape my pathetic life for just a little bit。 The writing is so immersive and I found myself hungry for more as soon as I finished it (that same night that I started it)。 I understand that some people are not the biggest fan of this series, but I truly loved it。 It somehow cap I was in the biggest reading slump of my life — stressed out because of school, struggling mentally because of COVID, finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning — when suddenly I started reading this book and got to escape my pathetic life for just a little bit。 The writing is so immersive and I found myself hungry for more as soon as I finished it (that same night that I started it)。 I understand that some people are not the biggest fan of this series, but I truly loved it。 It somehow captures the magic that 2014 popular YA books had while still feeling modern and unique。 My only complaint is that I wish this series was longer。 I think, objectively, it is the perfect length, but I could read about the characters for ages even if they weren’t doing anything。 And that’s what really makes these books stand out— the characters。 I have strong feelings about every one of them (bad or good) and that is truly what I think is a measure of a good book。 This book not only meets the standards of the first one, but exceeds them。 This series is sure to go down as a modern YA classic。 。。。more

All I can really say is WOW。 This book is so beautifully crafted and the world-building is, quite literally, out of this world。 I was in a reading slump and couldn't pick up any books for months to save my life, but The Folk of the Air series threw me back into the literary world and I'm so grateful。 Holly Black is an outstanding author and her characters are depicted so well, it is as if they are actual people (or Fae, for the matter)。 One thing I would've loved to see however was a bit more di All I can really say is WOW。 This book is so beautifully crafted and the world-building is, quite literally, out of this world。 I was in a reading slump and couldn't pick up any books for months to save my life, but The Folk of the Air series threw me back into the literary world and I'm so grateful。 Holly Black is an outstanding author and her characters are depicted so well, it is as if they are actual people (or Fae, for the matter)。 One thing I would've loved to see however was a bit more diversity, but ultimately that didn't take away from the story in my opinion。 If you're looking for a quick, fun read, this is the book for you! I finished the entire series in a little over a week。Lastly, I want to emphasize how grateful I am that I was pulled out of my reading slump by this series。 Since reading the last book, I've read so many other incredible authors that I wouldn't have found out about otherwise。 Holly, you're a literary genius。 。。。more

This is a 4。5/5 stars。 I really wish I could give it a full 5 but there are some critiques down below that shows why。 They are minor, but broke my immersion。。。 In YA trilogies, specifically, I love second books。 Something about the second book in a YA trilogy always has this unique dynamism that has me really invested and The Wicked King was no exception。 I liked this significantly better than The Cruel Prince, which is not discredit CP, on almost all fronts (the only think I loved more in CP wa This is a 4。5/5 stars。 I really wish I could give it a full 5 but there are some critiques down below that shows why。 They are minor, but broke my immersion。。。 In YA trilogies, specifically, I love second books。 Something about the second book in a YA trilogy always has this unique dynamism that has me really invested and The Wicked King was no exception。 I liked this significantly better than The Cruel Prince, which is not discredit CP, on almost all fronts (the only think I loved more in CP was there was more Madoc, who I am to believe has a larger role in Queen of Nothing)。 There is so much depth in the characterization of Jude, Carden, Taryn, and the whole Undersea which I really wanted in CP。 The world became even more lush, and vivid。 CP did a really wonderful job describing the physical world of Faerie, but Wicked King did that through the supporting cast of Folk。 Jude felt like a unique character in this book compared to CP, where she felt a little more YA trope "I'm not like other girls/I am unfeeling assassin" and I felt the gravity of her choices a lot more。 I could really feel her internal discourse will herself and with everyone she interacted with, and of course the writing was perfection。***Some major spoilers beyond this point as critiques***These critiques only knock WK down by half a star from a five, but it think it's fair to look at them critically。。。。。。keep scrolling! 。。。。。。。。。1。 I really did not care for the Ghost's betrayal。 I felt like there was no inclination or reason for him to do it, and there was no explanation after, and it doesn't seem like Jude ever revisits this。 I barely remember Ghost being talked about before his betrayal, so it kind of felt like a throw in because someone HAD to betray her very obviously。 I actually think it would of been far more interesting if it was just Taryn who betrayed her at the end, and they had to work through that instead。 2。 I still really have no idea why Carden has a particularly vicious hate for Jude。 He says he just chose to be vicious to everyone, and she's also mortal。 But that's it? And that's also the reason he's so inexplicably drawn to her? I had a really hard time conceding with that notion。 I wish there was some reason with gravity。 I was really hoping for him to vocalize his view on them as "foils", so to speak。 As in, he is upset that is is a royal blood faerie prince who's father didn't love him, and Jude is the bastard mortal love child of Madoc's cheating wife and his still (too me) loves her dearly。 I like where their relationship has gone, but I still cannot get over this。3。 Locke trying to kill Jude for "fun"。 I feel like these books have some of the best descriptive prose I have ever read, and then there is lack of exposition in the plot points。 It is a vividly described scene, but the reasoning or the gravity of the reasoning just was not there。 4。 I wish there was some more obvious lore woven into the story。 Not irl faerie lore, but the lore and history in the book。 This may seem picky, because there is a good deal of it。 But I wish I got a little more a history lesson on the alliance of land and undersea, or that faeries have high-high fantasy magic, like pulling islands into existence。 Any history of the generations in between Queen Mab and Eldred would of been so helpful because I had a hard time caring about why Orlagh wanted to fight the Land without that gravity。 It seemed much more like a plot device。 Again, these are pretty harsh critiques but only to knock half a star (and rounding up to 5!), it's a really fresh YA take that I really do recommend。 。。。more
